Hikers Wool Blog
A dream realised.....
A few weeks ago I achieved a long time goal of mine - I walked the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Although it's one of the most walked tracks in New Zealand that didn't diminish the experience or my sense of achievement.
We started early - 6am - and had perfect weather. High cloud and NO wind. The views at the top of Tongariro were absolutely awesome in the true sense of the word. Like being on another planet. From the roads we travel on either side of the mountain there is no hint of what lies up on the crater. The lakes. The colours. The amazing rock formations.
The Devils staircase was not as hard as I had expected and going down the shingle slide on the otherside was fun. I only fell down once! The last two hours were through beautiful forest making it a trip of extremes.
The Hikerswool that I'ld given to the others in our group meant that we all finished without a sign of a blister and the soak in the hot pools back at the motel made for a perfect day.
The Crossing took us 6 and a half hours and in hindsight we would have been able to spend a little more time up on the tops just taking in the views. Next time!
