Green Shoes

I know I'm not the only woman who has a love affair with shoes. When I returned recently from a trip to the USA earlier this year I was feeling a bit guilty about explaining my 4 new pairs of shoes to my long suffering husband. That was until the woman sitting next to me on the plane told me she had 18 pairs of new shoes that she she had bought in New York! Even though she only had to explain her purchases to her cat I did feel that mine were quite modest.

But sometimes you see a pair of shoes that you know you just cannot live without. Last year I saw a pair of shoes in a shop window that seemed to have my name written all over them. They were apple green with a 2 inch heel - just beautiful.

I thought about them all night and next day I went back to the shop and saw that they were still there. My disappoinment was huge when I found that this was the only pair they had and that they were one size too big for me. Undetered, I tried them on. They looked perfect apart from the slight gap at the back of the heel.  "Are you sure they are OK?" asked my friend who was with me, "They look a bit big". The sales person, who was as keen to sell the shoes as I was to buy them suggested that I could use some heel grips - they would fill the gap.

Normally I would have listened to the advice from my friend but in this instance I became deaf and was sure that if I did not have these shoes my life somehow would never be the same again. I made the purchase.

The next day I put the shoes on with the heel grips but they did not feel at all comfortable. Hmmm...... what do I do now? I didn't want to admit I had made a mistake but things were looking grim. Then I spied the pack of Hikers Wool in my cupboard and I thought that if ballet dancers use this in the toes of their pointe shoes then it might work for me. I stuffed a wad of the wool in each shoe and with a few adjustments they fitted perfectly. The Hikers Wool filled in the spare room, was beautifully soft on my toes and my heel fitted where it should.

Off to work I went and when in the lift on my way up to the office a girl said to me "Nice shoes!" I knew I had made the right choice.
